In the 1970s, Yvonne Curtis emerged as one of the most exciting and engaging new voices in UK music. With her powerful voice and unique musical style, Yvonne Curtis quickly established herself. After competing in a talent contest and coming in second place, she got her first big break, joining the band the Oakenders as their lead vocalist. She then recorded with the Reggae label Third World where her first composition entitled “What’s Your Name” was an instant success. She later recorded with Empire Records, a subsidiary division of Jamaica’s Channel One Studios and released another hit song called ‘Convenient Woman’. She sang with the successful Reggae band, Serenaders, putting out songs like “Come Home” and “This Is The Letter.” The first release by this band was a single entitled ‘Only for Lovers’ and soon after came ‘Sweet Loving’ which was a successful hit song written by Yvonne.
A prolific songwriter Yvonne Curtis continued to enjoy success with her music, touring internationally, performing for audiences in Germany, Nicaragua and Brazil; and was featured on the Warehouse Showcase show, televised in the UK. In 1998, she appeared with Pete Campbell on Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast, featured in songs by the Reggae Boys. During this time, she was constantly writing and recording songs under Brown’s Music & World Sounds Records both as a solo artist and under the band named ‘Wavet’ which included further performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Yvonne divides her time between Jamaica and other parts of the CAribbean and the UK. She continues to write contemporary music, releasing new songs with the label Digital Jukebox Records and there is a new documentary about her life in the works called, Untold Reggae.
